Why did you pick Horror as your genre for 'Beyond Mamushi'?

Horror fit perfectly the overall atmosphere of dread and hopelessness of the film. I knew I was writing a horror script but saying that the film could be a violent dark drama that’s wrapped up three times, once in horror, twice in crime and a third time in the supernatural , but predominantly this is 100% a horror film that delves very deep into the psychological torment of its subject. I have made horror films before but personally this is next level to anything else I’ve done. The film is distressing, cold, brutal, cruel and depressing which is exactly how I wanted it.

What inspired you during your film making process?

I have known many people who have unfortunately been though domestic violence, and I really wanted to address this. My films always have some sort of social comment as a straight down the line horror film does nothing for me personally when it comes to writing. I had no particular film inspirations as such for this one but stuff like Lords of Chaos, Straight on Til Morning, The Elephant Man oddly had some sort of slight aesthetic inspiration on some aspects of the film as did stuff like Jean Luc Goddard and Jacques Tati when it comes to camera angles.

What are some of the challenges and positives you have experienced whilst creating a low budget horror film?

Locations is the no.1 struggle every time then inevitably money, but I like it this way. I like the struggle aspect as overcoming it is a personal achievement. Upping the ambition with each film and succeeding is a great feeling. The whole team work so hard. The last two films including this one are of a higher budget than I’m used to. Getting an agent, promotion are all struggles.
Freedom is really to make the film you originally envisaged with no intervention from companies telling you what to do. But the difficulties far outweigh the positives. You can get a film done in quicker time and can have the opportunity to make a film with less money so they're all positives.

What is your key message in 'Beyond Mamushi'?

That it’s something that does really happen as opposed to fantasy and they could learn many things from it psychologically. It’s not just your fun night in or out, get the pizza and popcorn in horror, it’s a deeply unhappy and very unfair story that could possibly resonate with many people suffering from cripplingly anxiety, depression and being victims of domestic violence. It’s a film that will make you think about things long after you’ve watched it.

Out of curiosity, why do you think people are drawn towards the horror genre?

Possibly it makes them look at themselves, what their scared of. What their capable of maybe. The classic cheesy thing I always hear is people like to connect with their dark side, but I think it goes far deeper than that obvious quote as that's very peripheral. It’s like armchair murderers and armchair victims, most people never want to be either, but they love to tap into murky human psychological horror through cinema. People don’t just want to be scared they love to be scared. If you can’t face your fear, then why call it fear at all.
